WARNING!!!! if you know me personally, you may read my diary, but if you do, you take the chance of hearing things you don't want to know, misunderstanding what I've written and being hurt by it. My god my god my god.
The internet is so complicated. I forget, using Geocities for my personal site, and Diaryland for my diary.
But apparently to have a professional web presence (yup, THREE times today I have been asked about my "web presence"!!), I need to:
1) register a domain name. That is not a problem. The domain names I want are not popular, not at all.
2) Find a host slash internet service provider. I was refered to one Elephanthost.com by friends of mine. It is Canadian, and helps Elephants and even gives you a free earth-friendly book when you sign up.
What's the problem?? The have a rule of NO ADULT CONTENT, including nothing that could be deemed offensive, or having nudity or partial nudity. I don't know about you, but "offensive" and "partial nudity" are pretty vague terms. I mean apparently the front page of the newspaper with Janet Jackson's tit is offensive so some.
And they say that I cannot LINK to any site that has nudity, or partial nudity or adult content. That is wild. If I link to a photographer's site, or a magazine, or an artist, and they put up a drawing in a month that has a naked lady on it, I am screwed. In that if anyone complains, the server would have every right to yank my site offline without any warning for contravening the conditions of them hosting me.
This is not a good thing. I talked with a friend of mine who makes websites and he concurred. Yes, they could at any moment yank my site. And since I'd like to have a site for my comics, which have adult (ie stories about sex, relationships, issues like posing for a pornographer) though not XXX content, with drawings where there definitely is nudity or partial nudity, that is out of the question.
So now I'm looking at other host possibilities. Anyone got any great suggestions? I was also suggested to check out Doteasy.com which seems cool. But in signing up for registering a domain name, it seems I have to right away chose a hosting option, which I don't feel informed enough to do tonight.
And
3) I need to find some sort of software that can transfer files to the host. I don't understand why these hosts can't just have a simple thing like Diaryland or Geocities, where I have a file manager, and just click on "new html page" and I get a blank box, in which I can write my html. But apparently these hosts do NOT have such a service. I need to have software which does this myself.
Someone suggested Dreamweaver. Haha. I looked at the macromedia site and it says it costs $899 US for Dreamweaver Studio 2004. And on top of that it is only good for versions of OSX. Once again Macromedia's website is no help at all... I cannot find another version of Dreamweaver that would be compatible with my OS9.2... when you look at "product chooser" the only Dreamweaver choice it gives is the newest one. So stupid. Kind of like you could only buy gasoline for 2005 cars, and none for cars that are not the newest models. Sure yeah we live in a society where every person has the money to upgrade their computers and software three times a year. And invest in $900 US software to make one website. Yup.
Anyways, it is not going so well for this great idea.
I am totally tempted to go with Geocities professional program, but it is expensive as shit. And I haven't checked their faqs... they probably have some no adult content rule as well. But at least I wouldn't need $900 worth of new software that I'd have to learn.

Haha. Do I have a web presence? Well, I have a personal site, and an online diary that I update daily. SIlly me.
Tah. Back to trying to figure this out.
