Hold on to what is good even if it is a handful of earth.
Hold on to what you believe even if it is a tree which stands by itself.
Hold on to what you must do even if it is a long way from here.
Hold on to life even when it is easier letting go.
Hold on to my hand even when I have gone away from you.

WARNING!!!! if you know me personally, you may read my diary, but if you do, you take the chance of hearing things you don't want to know, misunderstanding what I've written and being hurt by it. If you are unsure if it is ok to read, save yourself and me the grief and heartache, and ask first!!! Please note that this is a DIARY, ie my subjective feelings, hearsay, suppositions, and outpourings of ranting of the moment. It does not represent objective news, the whole of what I think of a topic or someone, or even a thought-out representation of any of the above. Keep that in mind. Thanks. * Here is a Diary Etiquette Read Me.

A Fetching HTML Epiphany

Well, I have gone from totally pissily annoyed to happily WOW in like two seconds.

Well, actually about three quarters of an hour.

Three quarters of a hour ago, I was gettin the runaround from everyone... which is normal. Everyone is busy. Well, at least they have other things to do than help me get a website together.

The guy who fixed my computer was on jobs all day, and didn't have time to answer questions on the phone.

The computer geek friend who I was going to hire to make a site for me doesn't understand Macs, doesn't WANT to understand Macs, and although he knows everything there is to know about putting a website online, every name of software he knows is PC and he doesn't know the Mac equivalents (ie there is something called Fetch, and when I mentioned it, he stopped listening to me, cuz he thought I was talking to my dog and not to him!! hehe... what is with these technology-naming people who want to call things "Fido" and "Fetch"??)

The Mac computer geek girl wasn't in the office today, but the message will sometime be passed to her to call me.

So, everyone is like "well, I'll ask around if I have any friends of friends who could maybe get you a call when they have time"... well, you can see how incredibly productive and specific this is towards getting a page done! Not.

That is if they even remember to "ask around". Gll.

BUT, in his impatience to get off the phone, the computer fixer guy snapped "Well, you can write html IN SIMPLETEXT, and preview it IN YOUR BROWSER!!" (he didn't say "for god's sake" but you could hear it in the tone of voice).

BRILLIANT!! I tried it and YES! I can write in a stupid little white simpletext window some html, and when I opened a IE window, clicked "open file.... simpletext document"... Halleluhia!! I could see an actual page, the color I had hoped it would be, with the images and text where I hoped they would be... and the link I made worked, and the "mailto" worked and popped up an email window. And it was SO EXCITING!!

So, I think I just need the "Fetch" software, so that the simpletext html is no longer on my computer, but actually on a webhost.

Thanks for everyone who has suggested hosts as well. I"m looking into them, reading the fine print and all. Hopefully by the end of the long weekend I will have actual internet presence above and beyond Geocities and Diaryland! (Thanks to Onewetleg" for her sweet suggestion that I do my professional website on Diaryland.... it would be very cute... all the art directors leaving their comments and notes for me! I could even write surveys... "how often do you screw around illustrators? Do you think it is ethical to negotiate a contract that you have no intention of sticking to? Do you actually try to sell books, or only live off the grants that you get for printing them? hehe)

Well, I am now going to go look at getting Fetch (which I believe I can pay for and download right from the website of the manufacturers) and also into more webhosts. I do dilly dally and procrastinate. But when I throw myself into doing something I want to DO IT!! :)

Yay yay yay for impatient people who shout the best (obvious to them, unknown to me) hints in the heat of the moment! Yay yay yay!!

2:50 am Well, I am over my excitement of the moment, for a moment, and just thoroughly fed up with my lack of email working. I am still getting mail from Tuesday and Wednesday though it is now early Friday morning. It is trickling in, in no particular order. It is a pain in the ass, since I feel it is pointless to send emails to people enquiring, for instance, what webhost they use, if I want prompt replies. I have no idea if the person has replied and it just got lost in Videotron for several days. Grrr.

Well, I am seeing that the adult content thing is a pain in the ass. I guess that I should contact a few lesbigay places, bookstores and such. I have looked at doteasy.com, at Westhost.com, and Bluegenesis.com and they all seem to have adult content rules. What the hell is "adult" or "obscene" anyways? If I draw my character naked, having sex with someone, but not in a lewd or provocative manner, it is probably adult but it is not pornographic. If I draw her wearing a dildo, or write "fuckin faggot" that is adult, but probably still not pornographic. But who knows.

Westhost was suggested by Sleepyzoe and it seems quite cool, in that I don't actually need all those things I was stressing over yesterday... it seems to have a filemanager and an upload system integrated, so I don't need to buy this Fetch FTP thingie, at least not yet, or not ever. But I called them, to see if their 1-800 number worked from Canada (it does), but hell, they are located in UTAH!! Now Utah, is NOT known for it's progressive attitudes on lesbians, bisexuals, or on general liberal content. Nope, not at all. On the other hand, who knows, maybe they are exceptionally cool Utah folk who own it. But still, if they want to define obscene, I would rather it be Paris and not Salt Lake City community standards I was going by, especially considering the horrid Ashcroft supported War On Adult Stuff that is Bad for Adults going on. Nothing like having my domain washed down the drain like so many home-aborted babies. sigh.

Does ANYONE have any good suggestions of servers that aren't serving as a moral regulator??? And preferably one that lets you have multiple domains for the same webhost payment (I'd like one for the comics and one for the illustrations), and that has a file manager that does FTP itself?? Thanks ever so much for any suggestions. Deep sigh. It is INCREDIBLE how much time I can waste on this shit. Maybe I'll actually write another entry about my day other than this webpresence issue. yup.

Tah for now.

Well, I have finally found a webhost with a properly delineated description of "adult content" IXWebhosting.com:

IV. Prohibition of Adult Content Subscribers of IX Web Hostings services are prohibited from storing or posting adult content, or links to adult content, through the subscribed service. All material of pornographic nature is considered adult content. Online image galleries whose primary purpose is the public display of fine art or artistic mediums are not considered to be adult content.
Thank god there seem to be some adults somewhere around. Interestingly enough this website got a whopping 97% on a 4 month review of their services on Thehostingchart.com and it does look pretty cool. Whoppin huge amount of storage space and all that. But what does it mean, chose between Linux and Windows packages? What about us Mac people?? Huh?? Maybe it just means that THEY are running on Windows. I am so confused. I am sure I am boring everyone but the techies out there. But thus is life as a self-promoting entrepreneur these days! tah again!
